CAPTAIN: Francesco Testa
Francesco comes from a sea salty family, countless generations of fishermen from the Bay of Naples. Growing up by the sea, a life on the water was inevitable. For over a decade, Francesco has been sailing professionally around the world, delivering yachts and captaining luxury charters across some of the most breathtaking destinations.
Beyond sailing, his passions lie in philosophy, meditation, and martial arts, disciplines that shape his approach to both the sea and life. An avid water sports enthusiast and fisherman, he continues the traditions of his ancestors but now on a global scale. Deeply connected to the ocean, he is also highly sensitive to and respectful of the marine environment, always striving to minimize his impact and protect the waters he calls home.
CHEF: Karlo Mandic
Chef Karlo Mandić is a celebrated culinary professional who brings over a decade of high-end restaurant experience to the luxury yachting world. His culinary journey is defined by a relentless pursuit of excellence, blending the discipline of elite European kitchens with the creativity required on the open ocean.
Karlo’s talent was spotlighted on the international stage when he secured 2nd place at the prestigious 2023 MYBA Chef Competition in Barcelona while representing SY Kajikia, confirming his status as a top-tier yacht chef. His competitive spirit was further showcased at the Antigua Chef Competition. This success is built on a solid foundation of training at Le Cordon Bleu Paris and years of experience in renowned establishments, including the Michelin-recommended Hotel Navis in Croatia and the classic Auberge de Collonges in France.
Specializing in an exquisite fusion of Mediterranean and Japanese cuisines, Karlo is known for his mastery of fresh seafood and sushi techniques. Beyond the plate, he is deeply passionate about food science, nutrition, and design. This unique combination allows him to create menus that are not only visually spectacular and delicious but also perfectly balanced to meet the dietary needs of his guests. Organized and meticulous, Karlo ensures every meal is a memorable event.
Chief Engineer/Deckhand Salvatore Di Maio:
Salvatore was born and raised in Castellammare di Stabia, a town located between Naples and Sorrento. He has spent his life by the sea. He began his nautical career at the age of 18 as a superyacht mooring assistant, and has since gained over a decade's experience working as a captain and first officer.
Passionate about navigation and travel, he brings extensive knowledge and technical expertise to Shades of Grey, ensuring smooth and safe sailing on every journey. He has been part of the crew for one year and has completed both the Caribbean and Mediterranean seasons with SHADES OF GREY.
Not only is Salvatore a very good seafarer, he is also a passionate chef. He loves surprising guests with an Italian night, when he takes over the galley and prepares recipes from his Italian grandmother.
Salvatore is fluent in both Italian and English, and his warm, friendly personality and constant smile make him a valued member of the crew.

Originally from Brittany, I’m passionate about the sea and the art of service. Yachting inspires me because it combines elegance, high standards, and genuine human connection.
With experience on private yachts across the Mediterranean, Italy, Sardinia, and Malta, I’ve learned to be versatile, organized, and attentive. I take pride in creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere and ensuring guests feel truly cared for.
Positive, respectful, and committed, I bring harmony and reliability to the team. Working at sea is where I feel at home, and my goal is simple: to deliver impeccable service and make every moment on board Shades of Grey effortless and enjoyable.
STEWARDESS India-Lileyn Birek:
India is an exceptional hospitality professional with rich experience gained both on land and at sea. Her greatest strength lies in an unwavering commitment to the well-being and satisfaction of every guest.
India is fluent in German, English, and Croatian, with a solid command of Spanish, enabling seamless communication with international clientele. She possesses an outstanding ability for quick comprehension, teamwork, and goal-oriented work, always maintaining a professional and service-oriented attitude, even in the most demanding situations. Her Team Management and organizational talent ensure structured work and optimal results.
Key highlights of her career include her roles as Chief Stew / Head Waiter on the luxury yacht "Son de Mar," where she was responsible for the complete care of passengers and crew, from inventory and food/beverage service to event organization and yacht maintenance. She was also crucial as an F&B Reservations Coordinator at Bio Hotel Stanglwirt, managing reservations, guest communication, and supporting management.
