As the moon came up last night, I was reminded that Full Moon is this Friday (22 April 2016). Full Moons are always something special, but nothing compares to experiencing a full moon reflecting on the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean while barefoot on a beautiful white sand beach, drink in hand, with a steel pan band playing in the background. Those of us who live in the Caribbean are never at a loss for a reason to throw a party and full moons are no exceptions and Trellis Bay is the place to be for that special full moon.
Caribbean Full Moon parties are a major event that are packed with tropical flavor and great entertainment. Here is the BVI it is no exception! There are cool bands, colorful dancing mocko jumbies, a great Caribbean buffet, fire dancers, and an endless supply of cold tropical cocktails, all on the beach under the stars and the piece de resistance, the famous fire balls created by local artist Aragorn. These parties are family-friendly with adults and children alike dancing on the beach under a full moon to the beat of a steel pan band. The mocko jumbies dance with the children and the steel pan band plays late into the night as the fire balls on pedestals in the water burst into flames and the fire dancers begin.
You can arrive at these parties by land, but by far the best way to attend is on a private crewed charter yacht. You’ll have a beautiful sail into Trellis bay and pick up a mooring for the evening. Enjoy a dip over the side in the azure blue water and swim with the turtles. To prepare yourself for the night ahead take a nap and then dinghy ashore with the moon just rising over the horizon. You’ll find there are charming local bars set up in numerous locations along the beach. The evening starts with everyone dining at tables on the beach under the sea grape trees, looking out at yachts anchored in the bay and listening to the first of many bands to play for the evening. The music starts sweet and slow and builds over the next 3-4 hours, a mix of old favorites and pulse-pounding dance beats that make your body want to dance.
Trellis bay is an artists community on Beef Island tucked into the eastern end of Tortola. Aragorns Studio is a great place to pickup gifts to take home. They even ship if you do not want to take it with you on the airplane. Everything is hand crafted in the BVI and throughout the Caribbean. You may also be lucky to find a selection of home grown fruits, veggies and herbs from his Good Moon Farm located in the hills on the North side of Tortola.
A great family friendly charter yacht is the 45 ft catamaran Free Ingwe The crew are skillful with mixing professionalism with fun. Great with kids and lots of water sports for kids of all ages. Even though Free Ingwe is an older boat it is well maintained. The crew constantly receive rave reviews and and have developed repeat clients. She sleeps 6 guests in 3 en-suite queen cabins.
