The BVI Charter Yacht Show, the premier show in the Virgin Islands took place November 6-9 with a new venue at Nanny Cay Marina. With over 70 boats signed up – catamarans, mono-hulls and 2 power boats – is a sure sign that the industry is growing and the economy is slowly coming back.
Besides the annual boat and crew awards (which I will cover on another day), there are the culinary awards that many chefs in the industry covet. There are 4 categories and the chefs can opt to participate in as many as they want: Appetizers/salad, Entrée, desert and Coffee dish- Caribbean Mountain Coffee will be supplied to participants. Judging is based on the most innovative use of the coffee.
The competition takes place on the yacht and judged by well known names in the restaurant industry.
♦Davide Pugliese, Owner & Chef Wali Nikiti House, Scrub Island
♦Capt. Jan Robinson, Author & Owner, Ship to Shore Inc
♦Kenneth Molyneaux, Executive Chef Penn Hotels
♦John Albright, Executive Chef, Senior Lecturer H.Lavity Stoutt Community College
The chefs can enter as many categories they want. Each dish is accompanied by a card with the name of the yacht, the name of the recipe, and brief description of the entry. All preparation and cooking must be down by the chef, to reflect a typical dish they would serve on charter.
The judges use the following criteria and must be united in their top choice: Presentation, Taste, Creativity/Originality, Overall Impression and use of fresh local Caribbean ingredients.
Congratulations to the following winners and to all who participated. We certainly have some talented people in this industry!
